Recently attending a “parent” evening at Sydney University, I was thrilled to learn more about the underpinning philosophy for education at this elite institution. I say elite because I know how hard our daughter worked to gain admittance!
I learned these amazing young people are educated to “question” – told not to accept the status quo. They are actively provoked by tutors and lecturers with adverse theories and thoughts and encouraged to formulate “beliefs” to stand up, be forthright and challenge.
As I sat listening to the Vice Chancellor and others I began to appreciate why young people are judged so poorly in the business world. At one point I turned to my husband and co founder of the business to comment on how hard it is for these young people to belong in the cultures of our current businesses – when we have leaders who prefer to hold onto the predictability of status quo.
Who are these upstarts questioning what we do when they have no experience? They are doing what they’ve been educated to do! Often being lead by leaders with little appreciation for this fact!!
What will you do about this in your organisation? I would love to hear from you.
