I had the pleasure of “revisiting” my past – facilitating a conference for an accounting firm and many people with whom I worked with nearly 20 years ago were participating.
During the course of the conference we came to talk about our careers and one of the participants recited the “NSW Blues” (rugby league – State of Origin) philosophy of creating either memories or regrets in your career…..and it caused us all to stop and think. He emphasized it was our choice as to what we created.
I had the amazing experience of hearing about the memories I’d created for others by breaking through to become the first female partner in Australia in this accounting firm. People shared wonderful memories and I enjoyed and embraced them; and I realized although they were tough times they were “memories” I could happily share with others. One very dear colleague described me as a pioneer and brought tears to my eyes – I hadn’t really conjured up the memory strongly enough.
I recommend you “discover” your memories in your career rather than live in regret!!
GO girl! You are most certainly a pioneer and an awesome one at that. What a wonderful memory you have again created for yourself!
Mandy how inspiring – am sure regular reflection sessions with both mentors and mentees helps build more resilient and refreshed leaders. How awesome to experience your leadership legacy!
