When covering Self Mastery in our leadership program, I often see leaders struggle to understand the relevance of what they consider to be self indulgent time. They lack interest and purpose in investing time in learning more about themselves and how that can translate to becoming a more effective leader.
However once they have ‘got’ it, everything shifts and they recognise why Self Mastery is necessary.
Below, five reasons why we consider Self Mastery to be necessary:
1. Bringing complete consciousness of who you are what you bring as a person
Exploring who you are and what you bring to everything you do – through understanding personality preferences, values and thinking styles and how these influence your choices every day – means you are able to work more effectively and productively while unleashing your full potential.
2. Knowing how to “be” at your best
After investing the time and energy to be conscious of who you are and what makes you tick comes the critical journey of finding your ‘sweet spot’ – where everything is aligned, far more enjoyable and manageable. This takes courage and is why too many leaders avoid this analysis. Operating in your sweet spot ultimately means you bring more energy to everything you do.
3. Recognising what to do so others in the business can ‘be’ at their best too
Leading yourself to be in your sweet spot is the only way to enable yourself to lead others so they too can be at their best – the way you delegate to them, the conversations you engage in to support them to be at their best, the feedback conversations you choose to engage in and lastly the coaching conversations to facilitate their ongoing development and growth.
4. Increase the level of engagement for you, for others and for the business
Deeper engagement happens when people work in their sweet spots – they are energised, curious, passionate and ‘in flow’ with what they are doing, thinking and feeling. This makes it a better place to work!
5. Unleash the potential of every person working in your team
This level of consciousness means people are empowered to dig deep into their full potential as fear is diminished and they are encouraged to be totally real with each other
Self mastery is necessary knowledge for every leader to maximise performance – without it their performance hits a “ceiling” and they are unable to discover their true potential.
