I believe many leaders are caught in a sticky web of power, politics, compliance and avoidance. For many it is simpler and easier to just keep spinning their web the way they always have. There is too much at risk to remove the web and start afresh.
For many this only happens when they have a life threatening experience and I find that very sad.
Take a look at this sticky web you’ve spun – is it really reaping personal and business benefits for you? Speaking to a highly experienced existing leader recently I listened to him talking about the isolation he felt, that fact that things were the way they were and he could not change them because the MD drove the culture of the Exec Team. It was easier to comply, adopt to the politics by flying under the radar, avoiding any messy confrontations.
Far too many of our existing leaders are caught in this sticky web – I truly hope to inspire our emerging leaders to be courageous and not get trapped.
