I was watching young people performing a musical theatre piece recently to the song ‘Let your Freak Flag Fly’. It brought out the importance of diversity and uniqueness. They each wore a different costume and moved differently to the same beat. Yet their uniqueness was somehow connected to the bigger whole of the performance.
Today, listening to participants in one of our leadership development programmes uniquely reporting back on their action plans reminded me of this performance and the underlying concept.
For the organisation to perform and achieve great results while engaging with each individual working within it, it is critical to unleash the potential of each person.
As a leader, make space and encourage each person in your organisation to fly their freak flag, without fear of retribution. In other words value the diversity they bring, encourage their uniqueness and invite their active contribution.
Courageous Leaders know how important it is to believe in the diversity and individuality of each person. They know that only by bringing such a mindset will they unleash the true potential of each person, the team and the performance of the business.
