So many people ask me what they need to do to become more effective leaders. And it is easy to get bogged in the complexity of leadership and the way business works when it can be more critical to return to the basics and assess what you are doing well and what you can do more effectively.

A typical “basic” conversation that does not happen well and with enough conscious thought is that of delegation. Every day leaders walk the delegation tightrope and how they decide to traverse this impacts dramatically on their effectiveness as a leader.

Firstly is the mindset challenge – am I delegating everything I can?

Then comes the thinking – so you delegate to the right person and at the right level.

Lastly, you need to invest the energy and time into the conversation so you set the right person up for success.

I honestly do not believe enough conscious effort is put into the delegation conversation – the initiating conversation for the leverage cycle. Each of the conversations in the leverage cycle are critical for a leader to leverage their effort with the members of their team.

Courageous leaders invest time and energy into their delegating conversations because they appreciate the criticality of such conversations.
