Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; and effective is in the eye of the follower. There is no silver bullet, there is no recipe and that is because you lead human beings and each of them is different. Each of them have characteristics, strengths, capabilities, experiences and potential – and for each team of people this is different and for each team of people this changes. So to be effective you need to understand the people you are leading and determine how you can untap their potential so they can be at their best. And you can only do this if you are being at your best.

So the first step to being an effective leader is to be at your best in all the roles you undertake in life. Then understand each individual in your team and have the courage to make the decisions, have the conversations and ignite the ideas so you can all work from a place of strength and therefore create long term sustainability for the business.
